Mitcham Cluster High 5 Netball Competition

January 14th, 2016

The Mitcham Cluster High 5 Netball Tournament took place on Thursday 14th January at Harris Academy Merton. Seven schools from the cluster attended the competition: Bond, Gorringe Park, Links, Lonesome, St Thomas of Canterbury, Sherwood and Stanford.

The Mitcham Cluster hasn’t been very lucky with weather for their Netball competitions for the past couple of years and unfortunately this year was no different! As schools arrived they were faced with icy winds immediately, however this just encouraged schools to get warmed up and ready for their games as soon as they arrived.

As there were seven teams in the competition, a round robin format was used, meaning all teams played each other once. This got all teams very excited as they knew they had six matches to gain as many points as possible – 3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss.

The games kicked off with Bond v Gorringe Park and Stanford v Lonesome. All four teams took a while to find their feet and remember all the different rules played in netball, however, once they got going it was clear to see they were all on an equal playing field as both games ended in 0-0 draws.

The second round saw Sherwood v St Thomas of Canterbury and Stanford v Gorringe Park; again both ended in 0-0 draws! At this point, it was clear that teams needed to start focusing their efforts on claiming some goals in their games to gain more points.

In round three, Sherwood took on Links and St Thomas played Lonesome. Sherwood stepped up their game and scored their first goal of the tournament taking a 1-0 lead in the early stages of the game. This did not deter Links, they fought back to get an equaliser in the last minute to draw the game 1-1. St Thomas and Lonesome fought head to head with some very close opportunities but to no avail, the game ended in another 0-0 draw.

Links’ score tally on the results table did not end there, they went on to draw one match and win all their others comfortably. Close behind them was Sherwood, after a slow start they got in their netball rhythm and won three and drew three games.

This meant it was all to play for to claim the third and fourth positions in the table. All schools knew if they finished in these positions they would qualify through to the borough finals so it was time to step up their game!

The cold weather was really starting to kick in by round four but teams were determined not to let this distract them from their vision of finishing in the top four. Gorringe Park got their first goal of the tournament in a 1-0 victory over St Thomas which saw huge cheers and celebrations from the team as their hard work had finally paid off.

St Thomas did not let this deter them as they went on to beat Bond in their next game with a 1-0 victory. Could this be enough to put them into the top four? Lonesome and Stanford were not ready to let St Thomas cruise through as they both claimed some victories in their next few games too. Although Bond had really started to find their feet during the competition, they were unable to squeeze a goal in throughout their tough rounds of matches, however, they had held off other teams’ attackers to gain some points with draws.

Once the last game had finished all teams gathered in to find out the final results. There was a three way tie for fourth place which is the first time this has ever happened in a Mitcham Cluster Competition! This meant it went down to goal difference. Even after goal difference there was still a two-way tie which meant it went down to the amount of goals scored by both teams. The final results were as follows:

1st Links
2nd Sherwood
3rd Gorringe Park
4th St Thomas of Canterbury
5th Lonesome
6th Stanford
7th Bond

Thank you to all schools for attending and braving the icy weather! Congratulations to Links for winning the Mitcham Cluster High 5 Netball Competition for the second year in a row and best of luck to Links, Sherwood, Gorringe Park and St Thomas at the Borough Finals.
