Year 6

By the end of Year 6, all pupils are expected to be able to:

Read 'pearl' level book-banded books
Read aloud with intonation that shows understanding
Work out the meaning of words in context
Retrieve information from non-fiction
Use knowledge of morphology and etymology to read aloud and understand new words
Read a range of modern fiction, from literary heritage and from other cultures/traditions
Read a range of poetry forms
Identify and discuss themes and conventions across a wide range of writing
Discuss understanding of texts, including exploring meaning of words in context
Evaluate how authors use language and how this impacts on the reader
Summarise ideas drawn from more than one paragraphs, identifying key details
Predict future events from details stated and implied
Make comparisons within and between books
Identify how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning
Reflect on feedback on the quality of their explanations
Infer what characters feel by what they say and do
Discuss viewpoint within a text and across different texts
Understands vocab: metaphor, simile, analogy, imagery, style, effect
Discuss how authors use language, including figurative language, to affect the reader
